I've always said that if you do not utilise the space saved by the flat panels then you might as well have the best CRTs made. They give some of the LCDs a good run for their money.

Nothing wrong with CRTs other than their bulk. I have a 34" Toshiba CRT HDTV. It's does 1080i nicely and it's hard to beat the color gamut and contrast of a CRT. I have to admit that part of the reason that I keep it is the lack of desire to move that 160 pound hunk of glass. The day I get rid of that TV will probably be the same day I get rid of my other HD CRT -- a 360 pound 9+ year old 56" HD Rear Projection TV.

Welcome to the HDM club.
One thing you might have missed -- my Toshiba CRT set is not HD cabable -- it's about 8 years old and is still working great. Since I seldomly use it and it's working well, I don't see myself investing any money on replacing it until it either dies or I end up with some extra cash that's burning a hole in my pocket (not very likely.)

I am, however, in the market for a new surround receiver -- my old one died completely a couple weeks ago (it partially died a couple months ago but now it's a real goner...)

I just purchased this for my custom HT room and what a difference! I was so skeptical about buying this, as I had the Monster HTS 2600, but what a difference the Panamax makes! If you have a lot invested in your HT, I highly suggest Panamax. This is all they do.

I also have an appointment to finally have my display calibrated, the professional way this time. No more of those dumpy HD DVD calibration discs that don't really work too well. I can't wait! I'll keep you guys posted on the outcome.

Another nail in HD-DVD's coffin - Netflix just confirmed it's going Blu-Ray only

I think the coffin is well and truly buried. Went to my local shop tonight to buy "Rattatoie" (or however it's spelled), bought it on plain DVD and also BluRay. Had a look up and down the aisles just out of curiosity and couldn't find any HDDVD titles at all. Blockbuster has all the HDDVD in a cheap clearance section ... I might buy a load as I've got the dual format player. But it's game over ... !

Today's Wall St Journal notes that Best Buy are effectively about to do the same thing and will be promoting only Blu-Ray hardware and software from this point on.

Not to put the Blue Ray/HD thing off topic but I like Yamaha A/V receivers. I just upgraded to a 120 watt x7 Yamaha 861. It's got tons of features and connections for most any mid level home theater. I paid $800. A better value may be the Yamaha 661, 90 watts x7 for $500. It has most all the same connections (including 3 HDMI and supports 1080P) but doesn't upconvert standard inputs to HDMI like the 861. It still supports full S-video or component connections.
