Toshiba is slashing prices on their players... ~$130 for an HD-A3...

Not bad considering you can rent 400 titles from Netflix...
The A3 is still a 1080i player but not a bad price for a second player to enjoy some rentals. However, It would seem a waste to spend money on an HD-DVD movie collection.

As of Jan 8th there were 375 HD-DVDs out there. I don't see this number growing much this year.
HD DVD 375 vs Blu-ray 412*
* Blu-ray total does not reflect 32 Paramount titles that were previously available.

Yeah, I don't know where Netflix is counting, but they claim to have a library of 400 HD-DVD rentals and 450 Blu-Ray. I agree that this is a probably a dead format, but 400 rentals and the possibility of building a small movie collection at the less than $10 firesale rack... It makes you consider it to be honest.

I succumbed to temptation and built myself a new home theatre PC over the weekend, including LG combined BluRay/Hd-Dvd reader, so now I don't mind which one wins The local Blockbuster already seems to be selling off some cheap ex-rental HD-Dvds, so might pick a few of those up !

Is it the LG GGW-H20L? I hope it's better than the new LG BH200 player. I had that player, but returned it after realizing it doesn't output 24fps, nor does output TrueHD/DTS-HD to a receiver that can decode it. Crazy part is, LG claims it does 24fps and outputs TrueHD and DTS-HD and it doesn't. Terrible. What kind of shady marketing is that????

Well this weekend I decided to upgrade our Playstation 2 to a Playstation 3 so now I guess I'm a now member of the Blu-Ray club.

I'm a bit behind in televisions though -- the only HD compatible widescreen tv in my house is in the bedroom. The "main" television (that I never get to actually use anyway) where the PS3 and Wii are connected is still an old-fashioned 36" Toshiba CRT. One of these days I'll take the plunge and upgrade it but I'm not in any big hurry at this point...

Nothing wrong with CRTs other than their bulk. I have a 34" Toshiba CRT HDTV. It's does 1080i nicely and it's hard to beat the color gamut and contrast of a CRT. I have to admit that part of the reason that I keep it is the lack of desire to move that 160 pound hunk of glass. The day I get rid of that TV will probably be the same day I get rid of my other HD CRT -- a 360 pound 9+ year old 56" HD Rear Projection TV.

Welcome to the HDM club.
