The most exciting stuff though IMO, is the new Micro 4/3 format (Olympus/Panasonic). No mirror, so it's not an SLR, but you can change lenses. Same big sensor, great optics, but small small body and lenses. Also, electronic viewfinder and LCD view.
Panasonic announced the first of these last week.

I agree that great image quality can be had these days. The high end models are less of an advantage unless shooting in exceptional situations.
