At a guess, and without going out to look at the car, possibly a jacking point underneath and the bottom of the cover enclosing the engine?

There are four of them, one on each corner. For lifting the car up...:

Well at least I got the jacking point.
Re the above photo, I don't think the part is associated with any particular option and don't know if it is specific to V8's, but I did notice some silver stuff when looking down in to the engine bay and thats why I thought it was the bottom panel sealing the underneath of the engine.

Am I getting close ?

Not V8 specific and to be found in the rear. It is an option, but you only see half of it...

A question for ICEMAN. Or anyone that knows even.

If u had three identically specified E60's with colour, trim and wheel/tyre combo's - a 520, a 525 and a 530, (only I6 petrol) and without pulling the bonnet/hood to check what oily bits were in there, is there a way to tell the difference from the outside?

I think the exhaust outlet is the same on all?

They are the same.
I can't tell the difference. Maybe you can by the sound of the engine, but that means the car needs to be in motion, maybe...
I think there is no visible difference if they are debadged.
