there can be a number of reasons why you have this condition (from a biomechanical movement dysfunction to simple overuse). how long has it been going on for? first episode? any specific cause/activity that changed to start the pain? a new pair of shoes? a new walking or running program? how's the shoe wear pattern on the heel of your shoes usually?

either way, I tend to treat my patients acutely with:

1)rest: try and avoid any aggravating activities that increase your pain and/or swelling

2)stretch: 3-5x daily, a simple calf stretch/runner's stretch will do (I tend to suggest 30 sec stretch, 3x). Be sure to stretch to a comfortable tolerance, the stretch should not hurt/increase symptoms

3) ice: 3-5x a day, 10-15 minutes each time, any longer if just pointless..

Like any other tendonitis, it tends to be caused by some type of overuse that causes the inflammation, so treat that first....just take it easy and ease back into activity as your symptoms decrease

feel free to pm me if you have any specific q's

GL,

Gene

no pun intended right?

exactly correct tho, once the symptoms calm down you'd want to figure out the cause of the tendonitis

+1, usually used commonly for sprains...with a tendonitis...you also incorporate some type of light stretching to the involved tissue(s) as well

ditto on what everyone else said. i used to have achilles problems from years and years of soccer playing.

i'll add, are u overweight? if so, lose some pounds.

and make sure youre wearing proper sneakers when running...fitted to your body type and stride (ie; dont buy sneakers from the local mall foot locker staffed with pimply teens). nike sucks, asics rocks (saucony, mizuno, brooks, new balance are also very good for you).

I have tendinitis on a few knucles, brought on by getting them smashed during my basketball playing days (according to my doctor). What works for me is a course of Ibuprofen (at least 1,000 mg a day) and immobilization. Here's an article from a good site:

http://arthritis.webmd.com/understanding-t...nitis-treatment

but of course, you should consult your doctor before taking any of our advice.
