How far can you test drive a car?

My Ride: F11 -14
Have you like me struggled over how much you should drive around in a car while testing it?
Only a couple of years back the dealers still did not have any time slots; you were "approved" by your looks and the fact that you had a license - then off you went. But for how long?
I'm writing this as I just read an article on the Net about a guy how test drove a Honda for 3,218 kms in Australia. Maybe that's too far...?

I have had dealers let me take a car overnight and encouraged me to "get on it" to be certain I will be satisfied with my purchase...
In the end I probably only put about 100 miles on the last demo I took home (nothing too crazy)...

After getting through the paper works to prove I was a genuine buyer, my local dealer let me have an X5 for 24hrs test drive (he did not mention any limit on distance). Unfortunately, the test drive was booked in for a week day (rather than over the weekend) and I actually did not have the opportunity to travel far (max 25 miles). In the end I chose a 5 series anyway.
