Don't know too much but I'm thinking the hospital is in this area:
From the looks of things, that area seems populated and developed enough to have an airport, etc. I imagine some airline would get you there...
Here's some info on the airport:

U.S State departments travel advisory to American citizens not to go to Nigeria!!
Just an idea but since Nigeria is under travel advisement (click here), it might be wise to contact the US Embassy for help in
bringing your friend back.
Travellers to Nigeria have been cautioned due to terrorist acts and kidnappings.
If I were you, I would not go there myself. Get the US Embassy involved -- that's what they're
there for.

Ivan,
I travel all over for business and vacations, often to places with warnings or advisories. It's more common than you think. I wouldn't be too worried about it. Just keep your cash low, and only use registered cabs.
Also, don't get too up tight about your friend. I've been in hospitals in Zimbabwe and Kenya, among others, and have generally found the care adequate, if not good.
Mike is correct, however, your best starting point is through the US embassy. Here is some contact info for them in Abuja:
e-mail: Consularabuja@state.gov
Address/Phone/Fax:
Fax: (234)-9-461-4036
Public Affairs Section, Abuja
Embassy of the United States of America
Plot 1075 Diplomatic Drive
Central District Area, Abuja.
Telephone: (234)-9-461-4000
Secondary Fax: (234)-9-461-4011
Often times, fax is the best method in African nations in my experience. Keep in mind when calling that Abuja is 8 hours ahead of Pacific Time where you are, so you'll have to call early in the morning or really late at night to speak with someone. No offense if you make a lot of int'l calls, but you'll need to dial 011, then the numbers above. 234 is the country code, which you won't need once you get there. 9 is the city code, which you may or may not need depending on how the local calls are routed. It's an Anglophone country, so English is enough.
British Airways offers the most direct service to Abuja from LAX for about $1500 + taxes, which will push it to $2300-ish:
BA 282 to Heathrow
BA 83 to Abuja
The return is:
BA 82
BA 279
Other airlines go, like United/Lufthansa, but with multiple stops. It will save you some $$ though.
Good luck and let me know if I can help.

CWS has alot of good advice. Just remember to stay at a hotel with foreigners (like the Hyatt or something), travel with cars/taxi registered with the hotel or govt, and use the US Embassy as your local information center.
If your friend, an American citizen, is in the hospital and needs to return to the States, the Embassy will help locate the hospital and any other help you might request.
I've travelled in some unsafe parts of the world and it's a bit safer as long as you stick to the above.
