Don't really have anything constructive to add to this debate, only that my helmet is open face, purely because I find it more comfortable to drive with than a full face one.
thx Steve, and what do you have where did you order it??? no more questions

For the two BMW high performance driving schools I went to last year, I was able to use my closed face motorcycle helmet. The helmet just had to meet latest snell or dot specs, can't remember exactly.

Now I understand that the Porsche Club of America Events are more strict and would not take a motorcycle helmet, needs to meet a specific automobile spec, but don't know about the open versus closed.

As far as buying a helmet online, well I would only buy a specific make and model that I had previously tried on. With all the helmets I have had from my dirt bike and street bike, it seems there are great differences in the comfort from one brand to another, and even in the different models from the same brand so it is important in my opinion to try different brands and models on before purchasing. Just my 2 cents. Want it to be comfortable, don't want pressure points in the helmet. Will hurt your head, and then you won't want to wear it.

Clipped from the PCA 2006 rules under the safety section.

3. Helmets rated SNELL SA95 or later are required. After June 1, 2006, Helmets must be rated
SNELL SA2000 or later. Helmets must have the driver?s name on the rear, the driver?s blood type
on the right side and have the approved PCA Inspection sticker displayed on the left side. It is
recommended that helmets be replaced or relined after 5 years of actual use.
4. Drivers of vehicles without full windshields are required to have a full face helmet with shield in
place at all times while on the track.

yes you would need a snell 2000 or higher.. i have a bell helmet one off color coating and recently just signed by carrol shelby... a hans device would also be good.. depends also the type of racing. but considering you will be using it with an airbag equipped car.. i would go with a closed.... eric d

Not necessarily. Again stress that you need to try on the helmets someplace if you can if you intend to order.

I have tried a XL from one manfuacturer, and an XXL from another that felt the same. Sometimes the they will change the Shell size from one size to another, and other times they keep the same shell size with different size material inside.

Hi there, I follow this forum regularly, but rarely post. I think that I can make a contribution to this topic however. I am active in motorsports since a number of years and compete in motorraces in Europe.

If you buy a helmet, go for the best fit, not the cheapest out there. If you are on track, you are hot and have to wear a helmet for extended periods. If a helmet does not fit, you cannot concentrate. Therefore, you don't enjoy driving as you should, are not as fast and ultimately lose concentration and become a danger.

Full face or open face is partly personal. However, if I have a really bad crash I would prefer full face anytime. You get used to the 'locked' in feeling very quickly. I have seen what happens to a face when you hit the steering wheel (driver was in a 6-point harness!) and I can tell you it doesn't look nice! Don't think that airbags and belts will always save you.

HANS is nice, but only works with a special 5 or 6 point safety harness and suitable and certified full race seat. For in a street car just forget it. Unless you go for a Formula 1/Indycar look, have excess cash and want to look like fool, don't use HANS without the rest of the equipment which makes it such a great system.

Buy a helmet with a safety certificate. SNELL 2000 or newer is fine, some local norms like British Standards Institute will also do. For a list of manufacturers certified for motorsport use look on www.fia.com.

To those of you who want to buy online, think again. As I said above, helmets have to fit perfectly for you to enjoy wearing them. I go to a shop, try the helmet and buy the one I tried. Each helmet is a little different, some have a seam here or there, something I don't notice when buying online. Finally a responsible seller will never accept a returned helmet from a customer, how sincere the buyer may seem. If a helmet suffers a single hard impact (e.g. on a stone floor) it is in principle unsafe to use. Therefore helmets should never be returned to a store.

As far as brands are concerned, this is a personal thing. Some brands will fit you but will be uncomfortable for me. I have used Arai, Bell and Sparco. All different brands, all fit me perfectly. Don't just go for a 'cool' design, buy what fits and look for the least weight!!!

New to the forum and so pro thx for all.

I guess you live in the Netherlands ??? or

could mention me a place to go and try , here in Belgium, BXL I am not aware of any, that is why I thought only online I cud buy, I want no fancy but good,

Concerning air-bag I heared that I am not allowed to wear a closed helmet, only open.

But if you say that closed is the better may be in Europe we have different rules.

Does of you never wear helmets or just do not care who go to Nurburgring etc..

THANKS A LOT this forum is the best family
