I know there are many Muslims from all over the world on E60.net, wishing all a happy and blessed month of Ramadan. Ramadan falls on Sept 1st this year and lasts 30 days.
During ramadan we can't eat, drink, smoke a cigarette, consume ANYTHING from sun rise to sun down, so about 4:50 AM to 7:10pm this year. Most Muslims sleep then wake up around 4:am eat then goto bed again.

Why do more than a billion people around the world abstain from eating, drinking, smoking, and sex from dawn to sunset for a one-month period each year? They are Muslims who are fasting during the holy month of Ramadan. Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of the religion of Islam and one of the highest forms of Islamic worship. Abstinence from earthly pleasures and curbing evil intentions and desires is regarded as an act of obedience and submission to God as well as an atonement for sins, errors, and mistakes. Called Ramadan (or Ramazan), Muslims fast during this month from the moment when it first starts to get light until sunset.

Muslims believe that fasting leads one to appreciate the bounties of God, which are usually taken for granted - until they are missed!
Throughout the day Muslims are encouraged to go out of their way to help the needy, both financially and emotionally. . For this reason, Ramadan is also known as the month of charity and generosity.
To a Muslim, fasting not only means abstaining from food, but also refraining from all vice and evils committed consciously or unconsciously. Muslims must not Gossip, talk bad or critisize people during this month (and always), It is believed that if one volunteers to refrain from those things during this month, they will be in a better position to avoid unlawful things and acts during the rest of the year.

I have a Muslim friend at work who is observant of Ramadan each year. I guess it's like a "hard core" version of the Catholic Lent.

Happy Ramadan Tarek! And be glad you don't live in northern Sweden/Norway/Finland - still bearly any night this time of year would have left you a very thin guy after a month...

Hey Thanks, its actually not too hard, think of how many times you've gone without food and maybe a few sips of water or coffee to hold you up until late afternoon! Alot of my friends in Egypt who are coptic christians say their fast is harder for them because they actually have to give up certain foods for over a month, we don't, we can eat whatever we want *except pork ofcourse EVER* after sun set.

Honestly I think that today is senseless, because meat isn't a luxury anymore.
