Those of you here in the States who are fans of the NFL may have some idea as to the derivation of my forum name, whereas those of you outside of the USA who don't follow American football likely have no worldly idea.
First, I am a native of Western Pennsylvania; and grew up in the southern suburbs of Pittsburgh. As a native of these parts, certain things are ingrained into your being growing up; the most singular being a love and devotion to the Pittsburgh Steelers. My passion for the Steelers certainly was enhanced when the team won 4 Super Bowls in the span of 6 years (when I was between the ages of 14-19).
The members of the team received Super Bowl rings following each victory, and the core of the team had earned 4 rings. After the 4th Vince Lomabardi Trophy was safely ensconced at the Steelers HQ, the fans began chanting that it was time to "Get one for the thumb!" e.g. get the 5th ring for the thumb as that's the last digit left on your hand without Super Bowl hardware.
Unfortunately, it took 26 more Super Bowls (to Super Bowl XL played right here in Detroit in February 2006 that I gleefully attended) for the Steelers to win that elusive one for the thumb, and now the Steelers have a six-pack of Loambardis and rings to go with them!
When I entered the cyber-world in the mid-late 90's I had to create a screen name for the various forums I frequented and in homage to the gents in black and gold I chose one4thethumb. Even though the Steelers have won those 2 additional trophies, I just can't bring myself to change my on-line identity.
That, as Paul Harvey says: "Is the REST of the story."
