First Handgun - getting it today!
I kinda want to bail out from this thread. I get this feeling anytime i get to be offended, name called and whatever just for expressing an opinion. I may be wrong, stupid, uninformed, dumb or whatever you want to call me but i know one thing for sure guns are instruments of easy killing, lot of things can go wrong, and i know another general truth: this forum is what kept me active, the general feeling that one can d-bate a topic even when it becomes hot without getting personal or offending anyone. People like Jetblack and swajames and UUronL are just a few i really "argued" with on different matters but everything was cool at the end and we are still friends brought together by a common passion and even if we kept our beliefs, i for SURE learned something from them or others.
I for one keep only a pepper spray in my car and my fists if anything goes wrong!
If i learned anything over the last few years, and some of it i learned from this thread, is that in life there is no subjective general truth, and if i like something that doesn't mean the others have to like too, nor should i try to change people as this is the very fabric that defines people. Diversity!
A good, professional, and smart d-bate is another thing. That is also quintessential to probably most human kind learning curve. We all get to learn something from this, or at least most of us.
All the best to you guys!

Now you are insulting me??
You are the one who is uninformed.
This topic has been discussed many times before here on the forum. swajames and I have already had intelligent discourse regarding this topic, all without name calling or the disrespectful antics which you have employed. Read through the following thread.

IMHO - The historic gun culture of America means you will never see that country without guns, you have to fight fire with fire, Americas problem was the wild west era, it was allowed to carry on into present day, you can hardly face a criminal with a handgun pointing in your face and say "stop doing that its naughty" can you ? There is no turning back for the US on this issue, and whilst I am sad for them on this subject I also understand the realistic implications of not being a gun owner in a land full of guns............
That said - I fail to see how its justified to own AK47's / M16's / MP5's etc or hand grenades, a step too far, thats nearly as stupid as me being allowed to use RPG'7's to cull the local Rabbit population..... ??? why not go the full hog and have Fighter Bombers and Tanks etc ??? Always fancied an old F111 or Phantom , maybe an old M60, yeeeeeeeeee haaaaaaaawwwwww

I posted this thread about my new purchase with no political overtones, undercurrent, or message. It is sad that the discussion has devolved into this mess. While all are free to opine openly in any thread, know that those who have injected politics into a perfectly benign thread are the ones who are responsible for the current strife here. We gun owners weren't searching for a fight, but apparently we weren't enlightened enough to escape your watchful eyes and patronizing admonishments.
For those who would bash the US for its faults and unpopular wars, keep this in mind. The greatest advances in civilization throughout the course of history have come about in direct response to conflict. People work hard to survive, and some of the most innovative thinking happens in furtherance of this goal.
In recent history, we can point to the computer - a device created by Americans in response to the use of encrypted/coded messages by Nazi Germany in WWII.
Tapping the power of the atom is also credited to the US. While imperfect even when used for energy, it was a step that needed to be taken for science, and it can help lead us to energy independence. Military use of atomic fission spawned the cold war, the space race, etc... All of which yielded many technologies that we couldn't live without today. GPS, Digital photography, satellite television/communications, cell phones, etc...
ARPANET (now the Internet) gained most of its critical development steam only after its value was studied relative to survivability. Without war and the US military's interest in communications, we would not be freely exchanging ideas today on this forum.
The Coalition war in Iraq is pushing advances in limb replacement, computer aided prosthetics, and life-saving first-response care for trauma. These are simply the obvious benefits that we can see now. Generally, it takes many decades before the technology developed to make war can be seen to benefit society at large.
Please don't misunderstand me - I'm not embracing war, or trying to justify its costs as a calculated means of advancing civilization. I'm simply looking for the silver lining... because historically, there has -always- been one.
