I dont know what I did wrong, but the settings above have slowed down firefox bigtime...
If you aren't caching, then you have to load everything again each time you visit a page.
A slightly better option is to run a ramdisk (if you have enough physical memory) and configure your cache (whatever its size) to utilize the ramdisk instead of the hard disk.

Photoshop CS4 can still only access 3GB on OS X due to it being 32bit. To get around that I use RAM as first scratch disk. then a Raptor drive as second scratch disk. But i've hardly ever have to use the raptor as scratch.

This little hack will drop Firefox?s RAM usage down to 10 Mb when minimized:
1. Open Firefox and go to the Address Bar. Type in about:config and then press Enter.
2. Right Click in the page and select New -> Boolean.
3. In the box that pops up enter ?config.trim_on_minimize?. Press Enter.
4. Now select True and then press Enter.
5. Restart Firefox.

However, when you restore Firefox again, it takes more time as everything needs to be brought back status quo. This can make your surfing experiences a lot slower, having to wait for FF to regain virility again.
So, it?s better not to enable trim_on_minimize if you have enough system memory(which i think most of us do).

Reduce the amount of RAM Firefox uses for its cache feature
1. Type ?about:config? (no quotes) in the adress bar in the browser.
2. Find ?browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewer?
3. Set it?s value to ?0?;(Zero)

It causes more previously visited pages to have to be re-parsed (thus increasing their load time). Raising it has the opposite effect. One page will on average take 4MB of memory.

yup - that looks like the problem, simply because the pages are up, but the graphics takes a while to come up..

Do a search for XP ramdisk software, and you should also be able to find some "how-to" stuff on converting your browser to use the ramdisk for cache.
