After three days in Rome and Vatican City, my wife and I rented a Fiat 500 and headed for the beautiful hills of Tuscany. This "5" has a 500cc diesel, probably a twin (haven't looked yet), but it can hold its own on the motorway as long as you keep to the right when not passing, so the two and three liter cars can zip by. This is a tight, well-designed automobile, with excellent steering and visibility. The only flaw that annoyed me was a reflection from the light-colored dash into the driver's side mirror. The diminutive size of the car comes into its own on the many, twisty mountain passes that remind us of driving in Switzerland. With all of the small cars here, a 3-series looks large in comparison and a 5 series looks colossal. This 500 has more than enough room for me and my wife and two weeks of luggage. If you're interested, I'll post the fuel mileage when I figure it out.
