Hey computer guru's - Has there been a way developed for more efficient means of transfer to and from a server?

FTP just... sucks.

What OS and FTP client are you using? FTP is generally pretty good but there are other options depending on what your situation is. Do you have the ability to manage the server to change how you access the file?

I agree - isn't ftp upload and download speed mostly dependent on the speed of the networks on both ends.

Yup. Also, some servers require SFTP (secure) connection, which makes it even slower.

it depends on your network traffic between the station and the server. It involves a lot specially in work hours.

What is the size/capacity of MB/GB per transfer?
also do you zip/compress the files before to send? it helps too.

lol probably it's not the protocol but the connection itself.

What's the bandwith of the network? Is it LAN or WAN?

Yep, very likely could be a mismatch in speeds. We constantly fight the 1000/full setting on the network but the PC defualts to 10/half or some such thing. Auto/auto sometimes doesn't match up both sides either. FTP is very sensitive to that.

Server = Windows Server 2003

Connection = Locally is a 12mb broadband connection
Server = Not sure to be honest, but speed tests to other servers are around 5-8 mb per sec transfer speeds.

The thing that frustrates me to high hell is I average about 100k a second download from this server to mine (it's in germany, I'm in ME so no big shock I guess), but if I download 10 files at once, they all get around 100k! So how come I can easily get 1mbs down over 10 files, but only 100k for a single file, regardless of the time of day (speeds increase to 150k'ish on non-peak times).
