Thats some serious $$$$ I can see why F1 chiefs are trying to get engines and gearboxes to last longer, to try to help the lesser teams to be more competitve, and maybe to encourage new teams into F1.

I always knew Ferrari operated in the $400M range, but am surprised to see they are only third in expenditures. Geez.

Yeah, that's not news especially when Toyota came into the scene and just threw money into their team. Its not new news that Toyota is number one is spending. They make a ton of money worldwide...just a drop in the bucket for them. And they still are just a midfield team...

The major cost of course is developing/designing their own chassis/engines. If they had it like CART/IRL, there would be 3 or 4 chassis manufacturers to choose from and there are another 2-3 engines to choose from. You lease the engines, and maybe do a bit of wind tunnel work to add some unique bits to the chassis.

But in order to have the 'innovation' and cutting edge technology, this is the cost of doing business in F1. You're not really seeing a major cost save with longer lasting engines/gearboxes with development freezes. McLaren for example even with Mercedes as a partner goes through more than 100 engines every year. You've still got all the tests you go to, the dyno development and then of course, the race engines.

If you ban all testing during the season, you might save some real money. But then of course the manufacturers will spend gobs of cash on really fancy simulators to do the testing.

Bottom line, F1 is expensive and always will be. Gone are the days of the privateer teams being competitive and competing with the big boys.

And yet, since Toyota entered F1 in 2002 they have NO wins to show for it. Money doesn't buy everything.
