Its so friggin retarded! 
Ban all electric power plants except for solar, wind and hydro. Then get rid of the ocean super-tankers. Then cars can flourish and there's no need for any of this madness. I think all of us with at least half a brain have realized finally, without any shadow of doubt - watching what's happening in Japan, and how it is affecting the rest of the world - that we've gone waaaaaaaay out of our depth with all the shit we're doing to our planet. And we have no recourse, when disaster strikes - we thought Mexico Gulf oil spill was bad? Look at Fukushima Daiichi! Its ridiculous that they'd ban gas-powered vehicles in EU, but there are 169 nuclear power plants around the world either being build or planned - what the fuck are we all thinking? Wake the fuck up, people!

Not that I agree with this, but it is only a proposal, and the *actual* story is a suggestion that conventionally powered cars would not be permitted in cities. This isn't a complete ban on gas powered vehicle. And it is a vision for *40 years* from now...

I do agree there's a lot of unnecessary regulation... It will be interesting to see if this one has any legs. The anti-car lobby is all-too strong in Europe, but there still a very vocal bunch of enthusiasts that will try to keep these guys in check...

My only regret is not being born 200 years from now, when people will make fun of us for having relied on such crude and unsophisticated fuels for so long. Yes, oil will be all gone by then, and if the oil companies don't start planning for it, they'll all be out of business.

I believe that there is a way to use existing tech to nearly completely eliminate industrial pollution and reduce the use of oil by 95%. The problem is - you guessed it - regulation and the regulaTED. People are caught up in politics, while we SHOULD be saving our asses. Or, as Phil said, there really won't be a 2050. How many more nuclear meltdowns, or partial meltdowns can we sustain? The planet will be fine, but us - people - we are too vulnerable. But is getting rid of gas-powered cars in densely-populated cities going to save us? I guarantee, NOT

As for oil... In the face of an extinct (or otherwise impaired) oil supply, I think we can "trust" big business to find new(er) ways to clamp down on our wallets (new energy conglomeration, etc..) For now, I suppose there is more than enough to keep their balance sheets black.. actually, there's still a lot of room for development, drilling, and so on.. "Good till the last drop," I believe, is the expression... lol
