If it was 2 months ago, I said 50D. Now I'd pick T1i, due to the similar functions with 50D as well as size and weight (easy to travel with).

BTW - which Canon HD camcorder are you looking at? I was looking at the HF10 but that got discontinued. I really like the size of it. Now I need to start researching again.

Aren't they replacing it with HF20?

Canon T1i or Nikon D90. The T1i shoots 1080p @ 15fps and 720p @ 30fps. The D90 shoots 720p @ 24fps. I would recommend spending a few more bucks on one of these bodies and get a nice lens instead of buying a separate video camera. Any consumer camera you buy will not have the same low light capability and depth of field you can achieve with these DSLRs.

The price range is totally different. My piggy bank is running low.

The HF20 is out, so is the HF-S 100

the new line of "HV" cams are coming out as well with SSD drives.

Good thread! However i will soon get the chance to own a Canon 400D for a price next to nothing. I'm also new to DSLRs and i wonder if i should take that (as i said...almost free) or spend good money on a Canon 500D? What do you guys think? How big are there the differences?

Thanks!

I think for that money you should be able to find a canon 40d as there prices have come down now since the release of the 50d.

I know what you mean, actually the list price is 100 less than the previous model...it's just new so there are few discounts yet.

You have a point, but the thing is, this is going to be a birthday gift for my dad.
I highly doubt he's going to get into professional photography.
I'd rather him master a more...[appropriate?] skill. Such as mastering English
Maybe you should get him hooked on phonics? But in all seriousness, I would still get him the camera because you can borrow it. It's like buying a gift for yourself.
