ISTANBUL (Reuters) ? A restaurant owner in southwest Turkey was shot dead after he tried to prevent his customers from smoking to comply with a new law on the use of tobacco indoors, Hurriyet daily said on Thursday.

A fight broke out after Hidir Karayigit, 46, ordered a group of customers to extinguish their cigarettes when they began smoking at his "meyhane," a traditional restaurant that serves alcohol, in the town of Saruhanli, Hurriyet said.

One of the customers shot Karayigit four times after he took away the group's cigarettes, said witness Hamza Havutcu, Karayigit's business partner who was also shot and wounded.

Turkey's government on July 19 introduced a nationwide ban on indoor smoking, including bars and restaurants, despite the fact that half of Turks aged between the ages of 15 and 49 smoke; one of the highest rates in the world.

"I'm deeply saddened that the first smoking-ban murder occurred in our town," Saruhanli Mayor Veli Yalcin told Hurriyet. "They either shouldn't have outlawed smoking or they should have outlawed alcohol along with smoking."

Hey, keep me away from my smokes for more than a few hours and better leave me alone. The anti-smoking Nazis need this treatment.

That's sad. All that for a pack of cigarettes.

haha. I actually have allergic reactions to cigarette smoke. i avoid smokey places all together, and if a girl is a smoker, TOTAL deal breaker. I wont even kiss them. My mom is lucky she gets a hug from me the one time a year i see her.

The Turks love their smokes. A few years ago, I was flying Turkish Airlines from Istanbul to Athens. The front half of the plane was non-smoking and the back was smoking. I was sitting over the wing and the three guys directly behind me lit up while we were taxiing for takeoff. I looked around the plane and realized they had seated all the non-smokers at the back of the front and the smokers at the front of the back. Once we leveled off, almost the entire non-smoking section moved to the front near the bulkhead. By the time we landed, we all smelled like we'd been at da club all night. It was a little unnerving to see smoke on a plane even though we knew what it was.

I guess. Unless they had those car-type lighters? They were sitting behind us. International carry-on rules vary so much. Two years ago my wife and I went to Guatemala and I could carry on the machete with the custom-tooled leather sheath that was too long to fit in my checked baggage ONLY if I wrapped it in butcher paper and tape so it would be considered a "gift" rather than an "implement."

Good to know if I ever go to Turkey, I would only fly non-smoking flight.

Believe it or not, China is the same way with a large smoking population. We visited a few years ago, my wife was totally disgusted by the fact that people smoke in every restaurant. She just can't stand the smell of it.
