Ruth Chris is definitely overrated.

Ruth's Chris is the best!! A close second would have to be Mastro's, after that they all seem about the same!

In Charlotte, I'd have to say Ruth's Chris of the two. Their filet was the best. Very flavorful and juicy. Although I have had a lousy burger at Ruth's Chris at a vendor luncheon. Mortons was good but nothing real special. A Chophouse 47 (in Spartanburg, SC) and the Palm in Charlotte were better than Morton's, both taste and service. I guess I'd give the following ratings to the Charlotte area steak restaurants:

Ruths, Mortons, The Palm, Sullivan's, Chophouse 47
Fillet: 10, 8, 9.5, 9, 10
Appetizers: 9, 9, 10, 8, 8
Sides: 9, 8, 10, 9, 9
Deserts: 9, 8, 10, 9, 8
Service: 9, 8, 10, 8, 9
Atmosphere: 9, 9, 10, 9, 8
Overall: 9.5, 8.5, 10, 9, 9

Obviously, I was blown away by The Palm. Its in the top 4 of my all time best restaurant experiences. The other 3 were the formal dinner on my first Princess cruise, Emeril's in New Orleans, and Blue in Charlotte.

I'd say Morton's, but not a huge difference. If you get a chance, try Smith & Wollensky's. It's a traditional chophouse atmosphere, and they have several locations coast to coast. There's just something different about the way they age the beef.
