How in the fuck did he survive that? He probably saw the cruiser and tried to go around it on the grass. Obviously a big mistake in that kind of a car lol.

The grassy area between a divided highway is usually a shallow valley. This is to channel rain water away from the pavement and sometimes into a storm drain. The grassy area is also referred to as a "berm". Impatient drivers have also been known to pass on the shoulder, but that throws up small pieces of rocks and road debris. Maybe he was trying to be polite by passing on the berm instead of using the shoulder.
