BERLIN (Reuters) - A 46-year-old German motorist driving along a busy road suddenly veered to the left and ended up stuck on a railway track -- because his satellite navigation system told him to, police said Sunday.

The motorist was heading into the north German city of Bremen "when the friendly voice from his satnav told him to turn left," a spokesman said.

"He did what he was ordered to do and turned his Audi left up over the curb and onto the track of a local streetcar line. He tried to back up off the track but got completely stuck."

The police spokesman said about a dozen trams were held up until a tow truck arrived to clear the car off the track.

Several German motorists have crashed their cars in recent months, later telling police they were only obeying orders from their satnavs.

Actually, this also happens to BMW drivers.

I had to tow one after an accident (an E60), and the driver told me his nav told him to turn left. Unfortunately, there is no left turn allowed, because in the middle of the road is a train station for the subway (at this specific point NOT underground), so you can't see the oncoming traffic behind the staion. Huge signs say to turn right and make a legal U-turn if you want to go left...
A couple years ago a 7series driver dumped his car into a river, because the nav said there's a bridge. Unfortunately the bridge was a ferry, not there and not in service when the accident happened... Signs did warn about the quay there...

Well I think is just plain dumb , the satnav only assist you in finding your way around. You need your own judgement behind the wheel too, if you see no roads and no where to turn you shouldn't turn just because a voice in your car told you to do so.

Yep.
Can you imagine how hard it is to tow somebody who just wrecked his E60 and the guy is sitting next to you and tells you the story...
I mean, you can't tell him in his face that he is stupid... He is the customer... But, hell, you can hardly resist...
Such a trip to the dealer is HELL.
Yeah, it looks like.
Oh Boy!

Maybe you cursed at your car too much and the sat nav lady trying to take revenge

So next time instead of saying "start you piece of c $%#%" Try "Oh come on please start"
