Cool idea -- not sure if it will ever take off or not.

http://www.disappearing-car-door.com/

Upside:
- If everyone had these, I could start to park much closer to the door of the building I'm going to since I wouldn't get any door dings.

Downsides:
- I won't get as much exercise since I won't be walking as far...
- After washing your car, the window will immediately get smeared unless you wash it and don't move it for some time.

Cool but what of side impact integrity?

Don't know but if the door rides in a continuous track, it may actually be improved...

Wonder if they can make it work on sedans?......would give the 4 door coupe designers even more options for dealing with the B pillars.

Interesting concept I remember the BMW Z1 having doors that would slide down.

A friend of mine owned a Green Z1 and when sand or other small road debris got stuck where the door would slide down it started to scratch the paint.

Wow, really cool is this idea. If Comfort Access is a $1000 option now, just think how much would BMW charge us for this one.

I was thinking the same thing about damage to the paint but figured they'd think of some way to prevent that...
