This morning in icy conditions every school within a 5 mile radius was on a 2 hour delay besides our school. Buddy picked me up in his 330i headed off to school on the taconic must have hit an ice patch car fish tailed ended up in the median ditch. Got the car pulled out with some friendly people who had decided to stop.
ABS light is on but other then that very light damage. My driveway was covered in a sheet of black ice. Remember on icy roads drive carefully very slowly and keep distance between cars. If there was a car near us I am sure the result would have been very severe. Now I know why people get XI.

My Ride: 2008 550I LOADED, all options except HUD and NV
I went through this many times, growing up in Colorado with a Nov birthday I took my driving test in the snow. Yes, first rule is: SLOW DOWN!!!! Second rule is: If you think 4WD or AWD is going to help you on ice you're a body shop's best customer. 4WD/AWD helps you get going on snow and ice, does absolutely nothing to help you slow down or keep control on black ice, sorry.

When I used to ski every other weekend in Vermont as a child and teenager, the majority of the cars that were off the road in ditches that needed to be pulled out were 4 wheel drive. 4 wheel drive is definitely more effective than RWD or FWD in starting and pulling up a slippery road. But as John said, it won't do jack to stop you in snow or ice or control you car in ice.

Hope the roads aren't icy around Dec. 23rd and Jan. 1st and 2nd. I'm going down to Florida on summer wheels and tires. Hope I don't hit any black ice in the northern states. Going to drive extra careful.
