A couple of days ago I was lying in my sick bed watching episode after episode after episode of Top Gear on the Dave channel and the one where Richard sits in a VW Golf and gets zapped by artificial lightning came on. In the next episode was some car that had a carbon fibre roof. You can guess where my mind leapt. Does a CF roof really provide enough conductivity to work as a trustworthy faraday cage, thus giving you one of the safest places to be in an electrical storm? Of course carbon conducts electricity but how much actual carbon is there in a CF mixture. While on the subject, how much protection does a regular rag-top give. I suspect none at all.

I always thought that a car was a safe place during lightning because of the rubber tires providing insulation.

Nope. The tires don't have anything to do with it. Lightning can travel miles. An extra couple of inches to the ground is nothing

As I suspected then. A non-metal roof can result in either very little or no faraday cage protection at all.
