He was probably in tight quarters with his beefy 70-200. Hard to shoot when there's not much room to work with.

damn, u guys are good. I should have taken out my EXIF info....
i think i shot that at ISO400 or ISO800, that has some effect on the noise too, also when converting from color to B&W I found out you gain some noise.
yeah, I had to open up the aperture to sacrifice DOF to get a decent shutter speed... didn't want to have too much camera shake.. that made his legs blurry...
Cheers.

I thought your addition of noise was intentional. Depending on the dominant channel for B&W conversion, you could add considerable noise. The blue channel will be the noisiest, so I'd guess that when you manipulated the image to B&W, it used more information from that channel.
You can also sharpen using a mask so as not to sharpen areas that don't have detail - that way, you don't add definition to each spec of noise. This can and should be done if your intention was not to make it grainy. Again, I thought this was your intent and a nice effect.
100% crop at ISO 800 should be pretty clean. This is ISO 800 from my old-school 5D... no noise reduction. Bear in mind too that the older Canons were rated differently, so ISO 800 on the 5D is the same sensitivity as ISO 1000 on a Nikon or a newer Canon.

Canon released the first firmware update for the 5D MarkII. (1.0.7)
It addressed the following problems people have encountered with the camera:
1. ?Black dot? phenomenon (the right side of point light sources becomes black)
When shooting night scenes, the right side of point light sources (such as lights from building windows) may become black. The phenomenon may become visible if the images are enlarged to 100% or above on a monitor or if extremely large prints of the images are made.
2. Vertical banding noise
If the recording format is set to sRAW1, vertical banding noise may become visible depending on the camera settings, subject, and background.
-Vertical banding noise is not noticeable if the recording format is set to sRAW2.
-Vertical banding noise does not occur if the recording format is set to RAW or JPEG.
-Noise can be reduced if C.Fn II-3: Highlight tone priority is set to 0: Disable.
The firmware is available here: http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/firm-e/eo...2/firmware.html
