Everything that falls in there won't hit anything as it will fall out within the next mile.
(Also, it didn't fall into the engine, it fell under the hood, that's significantly different )

Where's the time things just fell thru and hit the floor under the car, instead of hitting some plastic "protector"...
I don't recall exactly how many bolts there were with the E39 M5 bottom pan but it seems a lot more than 4. Plus it had a deep dish so I had to drop it considerably. I also didn't want to jack up the car for fear of getting the cardboard cap liner floating into the motor.

Also as stated above, the tweezers few into the lower pan, the cardboard cap liner fell into the overflow bottle. Neither went into the engine but the cap liner VERY easily could have.
