Because about 17 other states tend to follow California?s regulatory lead, as many as 40% of the vehicles sold in the U.S. could be impacted by the proposed directive, suppliers say.
On the surface, it?s not a bad idea, but fundamental issues reveal profoundly flawed legislation: Buildings and vehicles are manufactured and recycled differently, and no one buys a building based on its color.

Another troublesome fact: Heat-reflecting paints for black and other dark colors on vehicles have not been invented yet.

Paint suppliers also say heat-reflecting pigments that could be used in automotive applications contain toxic heavy metals that cause environmental damage and create health and safety issues during manufacturing and recycling.

So far, auto makers are holding their tongues on this subject, but automotive paint suppliers, such as PPG Industries, are tearing their hair out.

?PPG obviously has a very large architectural division that paints lots of buildings,? says Connie Poulsen, global director-product management, at PPG. ?The theory when (CAR started this was you take the pigments used in buildings and put them into car paints. That?s a good theory; unfortunately it doesn?t quite work that easily. Believe me, we tested it right away.?
?Requirements for color palettes are different, the process is different, the pigments used are different,? Poulsen says, adding that new automotive paint systems also have to undergo two years of rigorous testing before being approved for production. That?s yet another item government bureaucrats never considered ? along with 3-year product lead times.

We are giving liberties up daily; here is a case for another one. This"global warming" thing is getting way out of hand. The last time I checked it is called "global warming" not "North America warming"; when the Chinese start to care about it then I will too.

gary, they aren't calling it global warming anymore they are calling it Global Climate Change now because there is no global warming. Temps stopping rising in 1998 and there has been global cooling ever since. Climate Change is now blamed for warming, cooling, weather patterns, storms, floods, droughts...pretty much anything that will help to fast track the socialist agenda. Climate Change/Global Warming is the greatest scam ever perpetrated on mankind. It is being used to gain power and socially engineer our once free country.

this whole thing is a hoax! man cannot control weather and it?s natural cycle? its absurd even to think man has control of such scheme of things. i haven?t seen anyone lately that can stop rain, wind, hurricanes, tornados, etc you get the idea. its all about MONEY getting to certain interest groups!! and controlling every little detail in our lives? just take a look at the lives of those who advocate it, their actions don?t equal with what they preach! one example, al gore?s home used up 221,000kwh of electricity a year, enough to power 232 average homes for a month.

The state will soon be underwater after the next "big one" hits. That's why I left. It's inevitable. Now's a good time to buy real estate in Nevada. Tahoe might be ocean front property soon. You can ski down to the ocean.
