of course they can respond how they see fit. the terms "your move" or whatever it was, followed by "checkmate" doesnt leave a lot of room for audi to come up with something along those lines. they cant just be like "super checkmate". they will have to go a different route. thats all people were saying.

... It's likely we'll see some kind of response - and Audi does have some pretty creative marketers
Audi has also put up a new billboard ad,
That is the result of Audi’s marketing team’s hard efforts to counter the BMW M3 “Checkmate” ad. Like many of the entries submitted, the Audi R8 features (not a bad idea). But the ad itself; well as I’ve said before, how do you top “Checkmate”? You don’t. So the results are questionable, to say the least. “Check your luxury badge, it may have expired” (?) What is that supposed to mean and what does it have to do with chess? Nothing, apparently.

Audi had to know a smart local BMW rep/dealer would come back with something like this, however, BMW needed to TRUMP the audi sign, of coure the M3 was the car to do it. Now that they have played their trump card, Audi can come back with something and it could concievably be percieved as a win. BMW has one thing going for them here, by using the chess term "ceckmate" it leaves audi no more room for this "add campaign/war". they are going to have to have some clever marketing to continue this war and not look like idiots. if they come up with a way to continue the war, BMW loses because it played its trump card
Bravo to craigm1841 and the others for seeing the marketing win here for BMW. Bottom line is Audi can now struggle to put anything they want on a new ad, even their top gun R8 or even swap brands to Lambo or whatever (with Audi logos on them) BUT truth is they can't say anything more in reply to "checkmate". Brilliant thinking of BMW.

the R8 is a dolphin , so much better cars in the market
While i respect the car for what it achieves in therms of performance, the look are really ugggh for me. Compared to the M3, the R8 is a somewhat angry dolphin while the M3 is a bloodthirsty shark. Too bad they dumped the CSL then we would have had bloodraged shark.
