The M6 really isn't in the same league or class as the R8, especially with the new V10. The rumored Z10 (if it gets built) would be the R8/Gallardo competitor.

Audi had to know a smart local BMW rep/dealer would come back with something like this, however, BMW needed to TRUMP the audi sign, of coure the M3 was the car to do it. Now that they have played their trump card, Audi can come back with something and it could concievably be percieved as a win. BMW has one thing going for them here, by using the chess term "ceckmate" it leaves audi no more room for this "add campaign/war". they are going to have to have some clever marketing to continue this war and not look like idiots. if they come up with a way to continue the war, BMW loses because it played its trump card

i dont think they could really come back with anything. Like you said the term "checkmate" is used when the game is over. Audi cant come back and say hey wait we got this car too...look at us again. End of story, done dealin, checkmate, game over. BMW 1 Audi 0

Of course they can. If and until the rumored Z10 makes it into production, BMW has nothing even close to the R8.

missing the point, of course they can come back with a car, but not a slogan for that add campaign. maybe "checkmatier" leaving "checkmatest" open for bmw... hmm, maybe i am on to something

Missing what point? Perhaps you could comment on the rules of syntax and lexicon that declare a conversation closed after one statement and one arguably non-sequitur response. It's open to Audi to respond as they see fit - Audi made no reference to chess in their commercial, they're perfectly at liberty to take the conversation anywhere their ad agency sees fit.
of course they can respond how they see fit. the terms "your move" or whatever it was, followed by "checkmate" doesnt leave a lot of room for audi to come up with something along those lines. they cant just be like "super checkmate". they will have to go a different route. thats all people were saying.
