Moral of the story: you reap what you sow. I'm shocked that Audi's ad agency didn't see this one coming from a mile away.

Hahaha thats funny! Ya it would have been better if they just used a 335 in the ad.

Of course they did. Audi's marketing team is sharper than BMW's (and I present the frankly appalling efforts for the new BMW diesel engines as evidence). BMW's ad posts the M3, Audi's ad was promoting the base A4. Not a smart move. Not only does that now leave Audi able to create an ad saying even BMW themselves don't think any regular E90 is good enough to beat the A4, Audi still has the latest generation RS4 due to the hit the scene if it needs some ammunition for their next ad...
+1 on BMW's flubbing the ads for the rollout of the diesel engines. They should be featuring the 335d's performance. 425 lbs-ft of torque and a 0-60 time of 5.3 seconds is something BMW should be touting. The stigma attached to diesels is that they are slow. In the 335d's case, far from it. But no one outside of BMW fanatics is even aware of the 335d's performance creds.

Interesting theory on Audi's ad strategy. You may be right or you're one step ahead of the Audi ad people.

Dead on, that's exactly my feeling on the diesel debacle. BMW has a great story to tell with these engines, but their marketing so far has missed the mark by a mile.

It looks like Audi USA put up the ad. Folks over at Santa Monica BMW saw it and put up the response. It doesn't look like BMWUSA had any official input on it, hence the overbearing ad response to their base model. Effective - it got us discussing it, but it does expose them a bit to a more robust Audi response.
