This lens will be going on a Canon 5D. I'm leaning more towards the faster 24-70mm because of the f/2.8, but wondering if the extra focal length of the 24-105mm will be missed for everyday shooting. I also have a 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS, so technically I have that ranged covered, but I'm coming from a Canon 20D with a 17-85mm, so the weight of the 24-70 is also somewhat of a concern, but not the deciding factor. What do you guys think?

I have had the 24-70 for almost 8 years now. Is by far my favorite and most used lens. I cannot say anything about the 24-105. I hear good things. I just don't own one and like the little bit of extra speed.

a great site for un-biased reviews is:

For my Nikon D50 I have the Tamron 28-200.
For me as a non-pro this lens is perfect. I can use it for almost every occasion and I never have to switch lenses.

Depends what you are planning on doing with the thing.

My Nikon D70 goes out with the Nikkor 28-80 lens most of the time, as this covers most of the holiday/general shooting that I would normally do. I do however often pack my Nikkor 100-300 lens when heading out for my bouts of planespotting. It's horses for courses, but the image stabiliser offered on the Canon 24-105 would get my vote.

Do you find the 80mm to be enough reach to get in tight for portrait shots? While image stabilization would get my vote too, the "there's no replacement for displacement" adage seems to come to mind with f/2.8. I feel like I'd be regretting not having the wider aperture than missing the extra focal length. Decisions... decisions...

Anybody else out there with an opinion? bump.

My error ... that Nikon lens I use is actually a 18-70mm lens, and it does let me get in tight for portraits (the 28-80 was the lens on my F80 years ago). Here's an experimental shot I took with the lens at the 70mm detent (this is the raw/unprocessed shot):

The idea in this case was to try to get the reflection of the airport runway in my wife's shades.

Also, having re-read your original post, it looks like you have the longer ranges covered by your 70-200, in which case you may be best off going after that f/2.8!

a 2.8 vs. 4 - i would go for the 70 because of the 2.8. in most cases, you will value the 2.8 more than the extra zoom factor on the 24-105

greetinz from a nikon user with a nikon 18-200 VR - awesome awesome awesome....

For Nikon, the absolute best general purpose lens is the 18-200 DX VR. It's sharp across most of its range (similar to the 18-70), resonably fast, goes from wide to zoom, is smooth & fast focusing, and has vibration reduction. Its a bit pricey and heavier than an 18-70 but more versatile especially if you shoot a lot of zoom. For a single lens, its all that most ameteurs need. The new 18-135 would be a better value but I don't know its quality and there's no VR.

I do have specialty lenses (12-24, 60 macro, and THE 70-200 f2.8) but I only carry them when necessary.
If I did weddings or portraits, I'd have to choose one of the f2.8 lens (17-55 or maybe the new 24-70).

I have the 24-70mm and it's somewhat heavy but I love the glass. I have it on my Canon 30D and it is super fast. I had the 70-200 IS-USM and sold it when I bought the car. I was not using that range as much as I thought I would. The lens that I recommend is the 10-22mm but due to the fact that you have a full frame censor I would get the 16-35mm because you can't use an EFS lens . I took these with my 24-70 and the wide angle ones that look somewhat like a fisheye with the 10-22.
