i agree sort of. try eset nod32 av (http://www.eset.com/download/free_tr...wnload_eav.php) it really is a great lightweight AV. for most users though, i would run an AV.

i use a staggered approach to keeping my machines clean since there really isnt a single effective solve all anti-virus program.
A Solid anti-virus program is a start, but you shouldnt stop there. Why? Having a single anti-virus program makes it a single point of failure.
Theres malwares, spywares, trojans, viruses, rootkits, and hybrids in between.
One of these can expose a weakness in an anti-virus program, and it just might be the one you are depending on to single handedly protect your system.

if you dont know much about these things, and if you think that your system is infected, visit the site below. Its DIY guide with free tools.
If u are still infected, then they offer free expert assistance. I've used them a couple of times myself.
