He has a runny nose and is really lethargic. I looks like he is drunk when he walks with is head cocked sideways. It seems his equilibrium is off. his tail still wags when you look at him, but that is his nature. I stuck my finger into both of his ears thinking maybe it was an ear ache or ear infection throwing his equilibrium off, but i got not reaction, and that wouldnt really explain the runny nose. I took him to the beach for the first time about 5 days ago.

I also put a lot of pressure on his back with my hands to see if there was something wrong with his spine, if so thinking he would react. nothing. just wagging his tail.

I work 12 hours a night, when i left for work yesterday he was fine. when i got home around 6 am, he was acting weird. strangly enough, he still ran down the stairs and then back up on the way to and from me taking him out. but when walkign through the apartment complex parking lot and the apartment, he was strange.

If he is acting weird when i go home i am taking him to the vet and taking tomorrow night off work. I may drive 1 hr round trip to check on him tonight.

anyone ever experienced this with their dog?

Not a vet but i would be very concerned too. Doggy has some sort of neurological issues. The runny nose could be cerebral fluid coming out of his nose. I would have him checked out as soon as possible. Did he have any trauma to his head like a bump on a piece of furniture or bump heads with another dog? Hope its just a dogfy flu throwing him off or something.

no trauma. he is completely coherent, responding to things he normally would. i even tried some keywords like "petsmart" and his ears perked up and tail wagged. i am heading home to check up on him now.

thanks for your input, i will keep you guys posted

Craig, it could one of many very different issues. Take him to the vet ASAP. I had a dog act like that when he ate something poisonous when I was a kid. One of my Bostons started acting strangely and holding his head to one side in April and it turned out to be a herniated disc in his neck that could have paralyzed him. I'm not trying to alarm you, but whatever it is needs to be dealt with now. Good luck.

i am at home now, came to check on him. he definately isnt feeling well. i dont think it is a neurological issue as one suggested. he is completely coherent and the head sideways thing is not that bad. i took my little bmw flashlight and looked down his ears, nothing unusual. he has had an ear infection before and his ear was gunky.

i am starting to wonder if it might be a bone/disc related problem. he hasnt eaten his food i put out around 4, he usually eats it right away. when i tried to get him to eat to make some sort of judgement as to why he didnt want to eat (i can read him pretty well) it appeared he didnt want to bend his head down. i am gonna elevate his water and food bowl and head back to work. i am going to take tomorrow off and get him to banfield in the morning.

thanks everyone for your input. i really dont want to go back to work, but i HAVE to get work done. unfortunately i have to prepare briefings for the morning.
