I've been in the market for a strong pair of closed/open cans after my Lenntek Sonix IEM's blew out. I'm currently looking at...
1. Audio-Technica ATH-M50
2. Audio Technica Pro Studio Monitor
3. Sennheiser HD-555
4. Sennhesier HD-559
5. Sennhesier 280 Pro
6. Beyerdynamic DT770-80
Open to any other suggestions, and always willing to take any advice and/or inputs.

I never understood the hype about Sennheiser - they make good headphones but I've yet to try out a pair that made me want to pull out my wallet.
For headphones, I don't think you could go wrong with Bose (especially the QC models). For ear buds, I have a pair of Ultimate Ears Superfi Pro.

Take a look at some of the mid-range Grado models such as the SR325is (or the SR125i if you want to keep the budget a little lower). They're not always the most appealing designs, but they offer tremendously good performance and typically come highly recommended in the HiFi specialist press.

I got to listen to Pink Floyd - The Wall on some rare Grado PS1 cans once - it was like I'd never heard it before. If I used headphones often enough, I'd have myself some Grado RS2i or RS1i beauties. But I probably put cans on once or twice a month so I'm happy enough with some comfortable Sennheisers. If we ever move to a house where the neighbours are close enough to hear, I'd definitely get myself some Grados.
