The 50D is an awesome camera. I'm sure your wife will be ecstatic that you got it for her and she will enjoy using it.

The Canon 5D Mark II is a great camera for portrait work. I believe that a few members of the forum who are also photography buffs have placed their orders. However, the 5D Mark II is slated for release sometime in late October or November. Apparently, there are long waiting lists for this camera and it costs a little more than double the price of a 50D. If your wife is quite an advanced/experienced amateur, then it might be worth getting the 5D Mark II for her. If not, she'll probably be better off with a 50D. Moreover, the 5D Mark II is a full frame (full sized sensor) DSLR. Any EF-S (crop sensor camera like the 50D or the 400D dedicated lenses) will not work on the 5D Mark II. However, the 5D Mark II will take full advantage of her wonderful EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens.

With the 5D Mark II being a full frame DSLR, naturally it will be bigger, and it weighs in at 810g versus 740g for the 50D. If your wife has small hands, she may prefer the 'feel' of the 50D.

Nicely explained! Thank you. I'll go for the 50D then. As No.1 she has a small hand and No.2 I don't want her to spend more money on buying new lenses!

Is there anything I need to notice when buying a DSLR? Do I need to check anything? Or it's usually fine out of the box?

Good idea! Save some of your money for more mods on your BMW or an upgrade to a 535xi or a M5! Since you have no interest in photography!

As for checking the camera, I'm not sure if Canon seals the boxes they put their Cameras into in Canada, but usually they don't. Open the top of the box and check to see if the plastic packaging the camera and other components are put in have not been opened and that all the manuals, software/driver CDs, charger, cords, etc are in the box. Other than that, look for a fair price and get any extended warranties offered by Canon Canada, and you are good to go! Good luck with your purchase and hope your wife likes the 50D!
