Yeah, I think even if BMW does put a twin turbo 5/0L in the new 550, I doubt it will have much more HP than the TT-V8 in the 7.
They'll probably cap it around 400 - 440 HP. Otherwise, the "550" (or whatever nomenclature they give it) will be very close to current M5 levels of performance- and I just don't see BMW doing that... Not unless they plan to offer two versions of the new 5, with a v8 engine- in addition to whatever (V10 or V12) they put into the next M5.
As for the M35/M45- performance wise, it meets or exceeds the 5 (545 & below) in all of the objective testing I've seen done in the major magazines. Subjectively, it rarely beat the 5- but it did win a few times, depending on which mag you read.
It wasn't until the 300 HP TT 535i & 360 HP 550i came out that the 5 started beating the (303 HP V6) M35 / (345 HP V8) M45 in objective categories again. This new M56 will have about 75 more HP than the existing M45, and I'm certain some of the flaws mentioned by the person who owned one above, will have been addressed.
Nissan knows how to tune a chassis... I mean, how else could a $70,000 GT-R, beat the $130,000 911 Turbo in its own backyard, around the 'Ring?
You know, it's a great day in autodom when 420 HP is not impressive... The Dodge Charger SRT-8 and the 300C SRT-8 both have 425 HP V-8's, and have had that level of power for years... Not 20 years ago, the super-fast Mustang GT 5.0L had 225 HP (and 300lb/ft of torque), and the mighty M5 had to make do with 272 - 315 HP. Back then, those cars were astonishing and fast.
Today, the V6 Accord and Altima are meeting those horsepower numbers and can outrun both of them.
Today, not the 1960's & 70's, is the heyday of performance cars... Maybe not in looks (Nothing is as pretty as a 1965 Pontiac GTO or a 1970 Chevelle 454 SS), but- definitely in terms of straight-line and cornering performance.

I hope that Nissan solves that this time as every major advancement raises the bar for all cars which competitors then respond to.
Agreed-

The nose of that car looks like its going to eat something up on the road, the new FX looks like that and I dont like it, the rear has that hyundai look again thats on the benz! Dont these automotive designers come up with any original ideas anymore? wtf i see nothing i like at ALL anymore! Sad really.. Im sticking with my E60 till something sweeps me off my feet and I doubt that will happen anytime soon..

A nissan/infiniti has no soul. A BMW has soul. It has a feeling when driven unmatched by any other manufacturer. It also has a presence unlike any other car. Especially an aggressive sporty BMW.

I test drove an Infiniti M45 Sport before purchasing my 545i. I found the BMW to be a much more sporty and exciting ride, whether it's "faster" than the M45 on spec sheets or not.
I also prefer the BMW's simplistic layout of electronics, etc. One iDrive wheel and a couple of steering wheel buttons. The M45 had a lot of cool bells and whistles, but if you're looking for a big, fast car with bells and whistles, I go with an Audi A8.
