What an amazing miracle! -- CNN is just now announcing that 12 of the 13 miners trapped in West Virginia are alive. I'm normally a very optimistic person but pretty much all day I was expecting the worst.

My thoughts and prayers are now with the family of the one that didn't make it...

Impressive! They should join their families in the church they were using!

Something tells me they'll be going to a hospital first. Amazing, simply amazing...

I read about it earlier too. Praise the Lord they were still alive . Miracles do happen. I thought for sure they couldn't survive.

Unfortunately, as many may already know, the 12 alive message was a miscommunication and there ended up being only 1 alive.

Man, what a horrible and sickening developement.

Not much else to say right now...

just pathetic that the media would report the wrong info for 3 hours. Literally gutwrenching for those poor families. I read that this mine was cited over a 100 times for safety violations??? How could they still be operating?!?!

Poor journalism on the media's part

At least one person survived, that's the only good news out of this.

I'm not one to defend the media but in this case, I don't think they're to blame. They reported what was being said by pretty much everyone involved in the rescue from the Governor to the command center. I think it was about 20 minutes before anyone knew that the information was false.

Looking back, it probably would have been a good idea to officially announce that the 12 alive reports were possibly incorrect (once that was confirmed) and at least stop the spreading of the misinformation.

Such a horrible thing to put families through.

It's amazing that one person was able to survive and obviously that's a small bit of good news in the shadows of such terrible news...

Well, I think it is their fault... mistakes like these are a byproduct of the current media environment. In the 24 hour news age, there is incredible pressure to fill time. It also means that news can be aired as soon as it happens, increasing the chances that someone might scoop a competitor... and if you're scooped you die. This leads to reporting with a shoestring's worth of verification. While I'll agree that the information appeared to be incorrect at all levels, a slower more careful process would have hidden such a mistake by allowing the correction to propagate in time to prevent the dissemination of false information.
