Hi all. I'll be servicing my car soon, and have read elsewhere on here that you should change the air filter at the same time as an engine oil change.
I'm confused by references to microfilter, which I understand is just to keep the dust/pollen out of the cabin.
Does the E60 have a traditional air filter in the engine bay, and if so, where is this located, and is it straightforward to change?

Thanks in advance.

Bal,

Is this white part the air filter ? (see pic). Did you also change your oil separator, as shown on this thread ?

I did this the other weekend as well. Pretty straight forward as long as you get the flexible tool for the rear bolt. Here's what you need to remove to get the filter out.....

And here's what might be lurking in the filter housing

Gosh ! That looks dirty.......how many miles had that been in there before this change....do you know ?

Thanks for the post by the way - very helpful. It's galling to know us 530d owners have got it so hard compared to the petrol owners just to change our air filter.

My car now has 74,000 miles. Last engine oil service was done at 60,000 miles, and having checked the (approved) service book stamps, it does not look like the 'air filter element' has ever been changed, even though the guidance notes say it should be done at every third oil change !

worth having a look at the exhaust manifold with a mirror while you at it too, as cracked manifolds are quite common, and require all these parts removing and more to access it.

If we are doing one-upmanship here, yours looks very clean compared to mine - my car had done around 40k miles at the time. Mine was completely packed with leaves to about 2/3rds of the length of the filter. The void under the microfilters were solid too.

I check them each spring, after the leaves have finished being blown around. I'm not parking my car under as many trees now!
