What is Active Steering?

Active steering electronically varies the degree to which the front wheels turn in relation to steering input from the driver. Under normal driving conditions at low and medium speeds, the steering ratio becomes more direct, reducing the amount the steering wheel must be turned. This enhances the car's performance in city traffic, when parking or in curves. At high speeds, the steering ratio becomes more indirect, thus providing superior directional stability and very good, stable steering response.

Additional information on how Active Steering works, including a short video, can be found in the BMW Technology Guide.

Totally agree with you guys, one of the main reason why i opted for the 5 series and not the 7.

I love this feature. Some feel you lose some control, but once you get used to it..........Never want a car without it.

Hello, I purchased my 17 year old daughter an 03 X5 and she has not complained about the issue I'm writing about. During the holidays I drove it to visit relatives about 300 miles from our home. The vehicle seems prone to oversteer at highway speeds. Can you (anyone) tell me if this vehicle has active steering and if it does where might I begin to look for problem causing the oversteer? Thanks
