Bottom line; how much do the winter wheels cost? let us say 1500 pounds. you use them for 3 years and when you return your car, you can sell the wheels for say 750 pounds - this amounts to 750 pounds of total cost.
I'm with you rsyed but I also understand the Brits, French and Benelux countries.
They are not used to snowy winters.

In the Nordic countries it's a must to have two sets of tires, all cars all sold with two sets.
But one can also only buy winter tires without the rims and change them. A huge save.

I.e. BBC has made TV-shows of how the Finnish airports manage with a meter of snow. Not a problem here.

Finland is now a SnowHow county

Your numbers look attractive but probably not realistic. Most company car users drive over 20,000 miles a year and will get though about 4 sets of tyres over a 3 year lease. If 5/12 of this is on winter tyres (Nov to March), you will be paying just under half of this. Plus winter tyres should be replaced at 4mm. At nearly £200 a tyre it soon adds up. I'd also be suprised if you managed to retain 50% of the wheel value after 3 years...Bear in mind that you/your company have already paid for the tyres and you are actually paying twice. The lease companies need to wake up or one of them should break with the pack...

I used to work for a global leasing company and now I work for an insurer. (please don't hold that against me chaps). At the leasing company I was responsible for sourcing the tyres for 140,000 vehicles and setting the maintainence budgets. The rubber cost was a huge part of the monthly cost as the majority of the SMR costs are built in to the purchase price of the vehicle with a fixed price service pan and a warranty for 3 years.

As a typical company car driver I can get through a pair of tyres in 12-15k miles so the additional tyre cost to me is significant. Also if I damage or puncture one this will be at my cost rather than the leasing company

As for the insurance issue on winters our underwriters see it as a risk issue. Which car is more liable to be involved in an accident? One with winter tyres, stopping faster than the car behind without them or being driven too fast for the conditions or a car left at home on the drive?
.

I seem to remember old Jag's having a warning sign on the rear bumper alerting people that disc brakes were fitted and to stay back

Surely your point about Jags contradicts your point about underwriters? By the same logic wouldn't the Jag driver be more liable to be in an accident? Who won - the underwriters or disc brakes...?

my last rwd car was an escort 1.6 mexico, things have moved on since then on all fronts other than winter driving ability

Any tips welcomed

Snow socks?
Without winter tires you are a risk for both yourself and others and it's a good thing that you can't leave the driveway.

You have a nice car, and you should go out and buy a good pair of winter tires. During winter season you won't put any wear on the summer tires, that way you are atleast making up for a part of the investment...

Edit: Now I saw that rubber is included in your lease. It's sad that a "good" thing like that is actually resulting counterproductive and unsafe.

While this is a BMW 5 series site, I think we all know you don't have to own or drive a 5 series, let alone BMW to post here.....at the end of the day, it's our enthusiasm for cars that brings us here to post and share our thoughts/experiences.....

If you look in peoples signatures of their posts here, you'll soon realize that it will be hard work for you pointing out your new rule to all members posting in the F10 forum without owning one.

Plus it's a good idea to drive other cars - shows you what you are missing!

Ipp, I really struggled to choose between the 'E' and '5'. What was the thing that made you go MB?
