I'm about to order a "face lifted" ED 550i, but have seen some posts of a turbo V8 in late 2007. Can you experts enlighten me on the ETA of this?

I hate to place an order for April and find out 6 months later there's a TT V8 about to be released....

TIA

No chance of a bi-turbo V8 in the near future. The earliest you will see a bi-turbo V8 will be sometime in 2010 or 2011 from what I have heard. The e60 will morph into the F10 by then. Go ahead and do an ED for your 550i.

I think that the M division will keep with N/A engines. Unlikely to see a supercharged or turbocharged M5.

EDIT: Not sure if you were implying the above. M division can of course increase the V10 with a bigger displacement.

And the stupid questions continue....

Why did they change it from E to F? Is it because they didn't want to go to E100 and beyond and decided to go to the next letter in the alphabet? Did BMW use to have A-D body codes???

All I know about how BMW designates their body code is that design teams are given a particular code and then they're off designing the next model of the 5-series. The winner this time around for the 5-series was the e60 design team thus the reason why the current 5 is called the e60. As for why they changed to F, I guess BMW didn't want to go to three numerical digits with E. It would appear that the f10 design team won the competition for what the next 5-series will look like.

Just found this on the FAQ page of this fabulous forum:

E60 is BMW's internal designation for the new 5 series, 2004 - Current. Every BMW model has its own internal designation. For example the touring model of the new 5 series is called the E61 and the old 5 series is called the E39. In more detailed terms, E60 stands for Entwicklung 60 (development 60) which can be translated into Evolution 60. The 60 means that this is BMW's 60th model design since the beginning of the company. Not all designs are put into production, such as concept cars, which also receive an E designation.

So it doesn't look like it's related to design teams but the number of designs since the beginning of BMW's history. But it probably could mean that they didn't want to go to three digits so they moved to the next letter...hmmm
