With the release of the X6 M and X5 M versions this week at the NY Auto Show, I'm guessing most of us now figure that the engine from the X6/5 M (4.4L TT V8) will be the used in the next generation M5. Hey, with 555 HP and 500lb-ft of torque it would be a nice choice. It certainly seems to be a good fit for those trucks.

But the release of the new 760i today has me thinking that BMW may do something more than just that for the next M5. I certainly didn't expect to see them develop an all-new engine for this new 760i, but they did - and they designed one that best fits the task of this limo: smooth and powerful. Here's some press release fodder:

Developed as a completely new engine from the ground up, the V12 is a masterpiece of modern engine technology. Superior power of 400 kW/544 hp comes at an engine speed of 5,250 rpm, with maximum torque of 750 Newton-metres (553 lb-ft) from just 1,500 rpm.
The unique status of the twelve-cylinder as an incomparably powerful and, at the same time, refined power unit is based on a construction and design principle which offers perfect conditions for supreme power and performance achieved without the slightest effort.
When idling, therefore, the V12 remains absolutely silent, not emitting any noise at all. The same applies to cruising conditions, with only very discreet sound from the engine being emitted to the outside. So it is only at higher engine speeds that the driver receives appropriate acoustic feedback on the development of power, with the engine providing its muscular V12 sound when accelerating fast and under full power. Again, this special sound effect under such dynamic conditions authentically reflects both the capacity of the engine and the intensity of power coming from within the engine compartment, characterising the dynamic qualities of BMW?s twelve-cylinder.

In other words, it's an engine perfectly suited for its required task. So we should expect BMW to do the same with the next M5 ... which means they may not just use the X6 M engine. Twin turbo V10 maybe?

Going from the vibe BMW has been putting out recently.

They will cop out and just use the M X6/X5 powerplant.

Indeed interesting... prior to this engine launch, the press were pretty convinced that there wouldn't be a V12 at allfor the F01, and hey presto here's a brand new one - not using the old engine form the old 760i at all! Makes you indeed wonder what's in the pipe for the F10, and especially for the M5...

Pretty safe bet the next M5 will indeed have the X5M/X6M engine. There's a significant weight saving in the M5 compared to the X5M/X6M and the TT V8 will address the only two areas where the V10 fell down a bit which is gas consumption and low end torque. There's no reason for BMW to make the investment in a separate engine (although admittedly I didn't expect this new V12, I thought that was likely to be a thing of the past).

BMW is making seems to be moving to forced induction. They get better gas mileage and great power from a smaller displacement. Also BMW can program the car to get XX.x mpg which plays good to the govt MPG restrictions which will get even stricter in the future but give the ability to go after market for more power. So if you need more power, 2k gets you 40-75 hp for those who don't care don't buy.... win win...
