F10 Saftey and Security

When the E60 launched in 2004 I was one of the first customers in Sweden to buy the car. From a drivers perspective I have never been disappointed with any of the E60s I have owned. My current M-Sport 530i is an astoundingly first-class driving experience.
I am planning to acquire an F10 in the second production year when the 1.0 version bugs are routed out and fixed. I will not go for such an early production car as I did when the E60 came out. Primarily because I don?t wanna get fucked over safety wise a 3rd time around by BMW.
I think we all remember the outcry when the Euro NCAP crash test of the E60 came out and stated that the car was only Good not the Top Performer we thought it would be.

In 2007 BMW launched the LCI version of the E60 and once more crash tests showed that side-impact-protection was hampered by internal design changes.

I don?t want this thread to be a rant/discussion of the E60 but rather a sticky collection of passive safety features and performance of the F10 in this perspective. If BMW does not get it right this time I will sadly go for a Merc or Volvo!

But none of the E60s is as safe as they should be. BMW leads the way in almost all other aspects, but passive saftey is that one area in which they have failed to deliver premium quality.
What I am saying is that I am very concerned about BMWs efforts to implement market leading passive saftey in the F10 range. Another failure in this area is not acceptable. Owners of BMW should get at least the same level of protection that Toyota, Volvo, Audi, Mercedes offer their customers...

These crash tests are one result from one car on one day. While they provide useful information, statistically they are irrelevant. Many cars would have to be destroyed to make a valid comparison. It's a ploy to raise insurance rates.

I do understand you. I had the same disappointment as you when I got my brand new 530dT back in 2005, just a week or so before the famous ENCAP test.
But on the other hand, you can be quite sure that the F10 will be safer than the E60LCI and that will make you in your case drive around in a 'unsafe' car while waiting for the F10 to be tweaked just a tiny bit safer.

But there are allways exeptions to confirm the rule; I remember a episode of Cops were the driver survived without a scratch because he didn't use the seatbelt...

Building cars to excel on government safety tests can backfire. Some designs are rigged to specifically behave a certain way in a very specific government test that does not necessarily apply widely in the real world, at the cost of more general safe engineering. I trust BMW engineers to design a safe car more than I trust the US government to mandate what is really going to make me safer in a crash.
