Most likely your mind was preset towards BMW by aggressive looks and "sports car" stigma attached to European cars by smart marketing which built that stigma over many years ("German engineering", "ultimate driving machine" etc.)

Not to say anything bad about German cars, they drive OK, have horrible electronics and general reliability (especially suspension, auto transmissions and cooling/AC systems) and substantially overpriced - but there's nothing special about them in terms of driving when you compare comparable cars.
Just try to "free your mind" next time and you'll be surprised how different you impressions will be.

I conduct a car reliability survey, and have a thread of the latest results elsewhere on this forum.

The latest for the F10, based on owner experiences through September 30, 2012:

2012: 11, better than average, small sample size--especially need more participants for this year and the 2013

2011: 24, better than average
