Anyway odd that every other model with the 3L turbo has the #35 designation but the new 5series will go to 540.

That tells you right away. It's a 3L motor and was called a #35. If it was engine size then it'd be a #30. Now the engine has been made even more powerful (about the power you'd expect from a #40 engine) so they've called it the #40.

The numbers used to equate directly to the volume of the motor. In the last few years they've fudged on this a bit as a way to differentiate one model year to the next when the engine size has gotten a little larger. The 545 and 550 are an example of this. Yes a 550i will have more power than a 545i but it does not in any way mean the 550 will have 500 hp or the 545 will have 450. Maybe you're saying the same thing I am, just in a different way..

My point is if the F10 w/3L T motor is going to still make ~300hp (which is stated in the the first post) then why change it to 540 designation? Seems like the only way you would do this is if its bumped up to 330hp or 350hp. (Even then it seems dumb to me but a lot of the BMW vehicle titling seems abs. idiotic to me now.)

its called marketing, they want the new model to seem more powerful or higher up in the line up, but its bs for sure

Semi-BS. If they have 3 different tuning levels for the same engine, what else should they do? I don't think they want to add lots of letters after the number (like i, ti, tti) so they've just used how powerful the tuning level is and determined roughly what normally aspirated engine level that would equate to. On this side of the atlantic they've done it with the 3.0L diesel engine too (525d, 530d and 535d all from the same engine).

So, maybe the 540i will have more than ~300 hp? Say 350. That would be a nice bump.

If I remember correctly, the 840i had 286bhp as did the E39 540i, so the new F10 540i with 306bhp is about right. Maybe it was the E60 535i that was incorrectly named for the last few years and should have been called a 533 or something.

It's all very misleading and confusing and getting worse with each model. I understand what they're trying to achieve but some mistakes have been made and are still being made.
