Whats with BMW piling on weight in their new models. The new F10 550 weighs 1830 kg (E60 550 was 1735 kg), same as the outgoing 10 cilinder M5, also the same as the E500. New 750 is about 70 kg heavier than the S500. New A8 promises to lighter than both. Not a happy bunny

Right, but none of these are going to be materially different in the F10 compared to the E60. As for unsprung weight, it's a bit of moot point in any event as the run flat tires massively increase the unsprung weight on the E60/F10 models which are equipped with them.
But, for example, let's look at the 535 E60 and 535 F10 - F10 has the N55 single turbo engine (rated at 300hp) against E60's N54 with twin turbos (rated at the same 300hp). Assuming that the weight of the F10 will be somewhere about 300lbs or so (too lazy to do the research ) more than the E60's, you basically don't have to be a rocket scientist to make a conclusion here.
As for the run-flats, aren't the new generation Bridgestone RFTs supposed to be lighter? Not sure what the exact specs are - again, too lazy to do research - but you get the point I'm trying to make... actually, what is the point I was trying to make? LOL I forgot

So you guys are saying that the F10 550i will be over 200 lbs heavier than the E60? I guess the additional 40 hp and 90 tq, really wil be necessary to accelerate the F10 like the E60 550i.
But I bet the F10 550i will still fly with a dinan tune
alas, the E60 550i may handle better because over 200 lbs is definitely a noticeable increase in weight.....

Yes, the extra 200 pounds plus of weight on the F10 550 vs. the E60 550 is disappointing. I read somewhere that the weight increase is caused in part by BMW cheaping out and reducing the amount of aluminum in the body from what it used in the E60.
With 40 more bhp and 90 more lbs-ft of torque, 0 to 60 acceleration is still going to be faster than the E60 550's time.
The real problem is that as the car gets heavier, it loses its tossability and quickness in its transient response. The E60 550 is already less fun in that department than the E390 540 was. The extra weight should not dimish the car's maxiumum lateral acceleration but it won't be as tossable. And given that BMW has been the sedan handling champ, that's a damn shame.
