My Ride: April 2007 520D M Sport LCI. Automatic. Sunroof. BMW Bluetooth. Deep Sea Blue Metallic, Natural Brown Leather.

My F10 520D has covered 8,500KM from new, and despite the Efficient Dynamics features supposedly providing advantage over my LCI E60 520D (163BHP), my fuel consumption is amost identical according to the trip computer!

From a brimmed tank I am getting between 1,000 and 1,150 KM. Trip computer is showing ~ 46MPG average.

My route is pretty consistent with ~ 90% motorway at a constant speed.

I am sure that with some more miles on the engine things will improve, but they have been very consistent so far with no signs of improiving yet.

How are other 520D owners doing?

Hi. Is your car an automatic. i have an auto 520 D SE on order for Jan. How do you find the ride on the rough stuff - I'm sticking with the 17s - better for Donegal roads I think!

The fuel consumption figures are the following:

Manual transmission
Urban: 5.9l
Extra-Urban: 4.3l
Combined: 4.9l

Automatic transmission
Urban: 6.4l
Extra-Urban: 4.5l
Combined: 5.2l

So your car should match these figures. But anyway now you have 184hp vs your previous 163hp and at least the same fuel consumption. So the positive impact of the Efficient Dynamics is more than obvious.

Hi artc,

See this discussion.

The consumption is about the same as in my LCI E60 with a 177hp/340 Nm engine.
My F10 has 184hp/380 Nm but it weighs about 100 kg's more.

The LCI E60 had a 4 star EuroNCAP rating the F10 has a 5 star one.

My ride was a bit ruff on stone roads for the first 2,000 km's but it has now settled to very comfy.
But I have 20" wheels (non-RF) for the summer...

My 520d F10 Sports-Auto, is delivering around 51mpg. I've done 3500 miles, nearly exclusively motorway miles, cruising at 70 nearly all the time.

Yes my car is an auto.... and thanks to the 8 gears, it only pulls 2,000RPM at 130KPH on the button!

I went to 18" alloys as there is still a serious amount of tyre sidewall with this configuration...... no problems with the ride on 18's.

I have my 2011 520D M Sport (sport auto) now since 1st week of January and have alomost 5000kms done .. so far the car has done an average of 32mpg ! this is about 11mpg less than I was getting from my 2008 (manual) model.

I rang BMW dealer this morning to be told it couldn't be measured accurately until after the 1st service (is that 30000kms ?) !

In fairness most of my journeys would be short ones and my 10 mile trip to work has about 7 miles of motorway, but that was the same in the last car so I'm comparing like with like I believe.

What are your thoughts on that ?

doesn't sound good, but of your journey is short and the engine never gets to warm up properly, somewhere in the 30's is probably to be expected. Having said that, if you are comparing an identical journey to your E60 manual something is not right.

WRT to comment about the first service, that's bullsh*t. My car averaged ~ 46mpg in the first 30,000KM, and I don't see it changing much since I've had it serviced.
The dealer can do a 'quick scan' for fault codes if you are concerned..... might be worth your while speaking to them about that.

Had my 520d for 2 weeks now (2 weeks tomorrow to be precise). 600 miles and 47.3 mpg

180 miles were motorway, the rest mixed A roads and urban.

The consumptions has gradually improved but seems to be slowing now (approx 0.2 mpg improvement per day now).
