The 5-series to E-Class dynamic is somewhat worse now than compared to the launch of the E60.
During the first two full months of E60 deliveries (Oct & Nov '03) BMW sold 6,594 units compared to 11,344 E-Class sales (63%). Current BMW 5 series sales are just 51% of the E-Class at the launch of the F10. Gulp.
But even though the E60 got off to a "slow" start too, it eventually caught up to the E-Class and at its peak (Dec 2006, for example), sold more than the E-Class (7,460 to 7,116).

The base price on the E550 and F10 550 are barely 2K apart. Options on both cars are comparably priced, and, broadly speaking, buyers of both cars are likely to specify the cars with comparable equipment. While you may argue that the F10 is new and arguably less likely to be subject to the same kind of discounts we saw towards the end of the E60s lifecycle, the E Class is already selling many more units and dealers have neither the reason nor the incentive to deeply discount either. Simply put, comparable cars are, broadly, going to be comparably priced. The competition between these two marques is too fierce for anything different to happen - neither one can afford for the other to offer a material price break for comparable cars. Simply put, market forces being what they are mean that you're not going to see any material price advantage between any of the premium German marques. You'll need to look to the Japanese manufacturers, and Infiniti and Acura in particular, before you'll see any meaningful price advantage for cars that directly compete with the 5 Series and E Class.

Not going to happen... The E-Class is the better selling car and will remain so for the foreseeable future. Biggest selling doesn't mean that it is the best car, of course, but credit where it is due - the E is the better selling car.
