If remember correct, in my old car the edges of the letters were in embossed metal. In my F10 it looks like there are transparent plastic around the letters "BMW".
Maybe it's just some wiring that's missing?

Agreed. I have black dakota interior and effect is much less than in the photos - but still worthwhile!

Flip side is I have Silver exterior and the lights in the handles have a more dramatic effect

I'll answer my own post:
I've checked w my dealer and yes, It's just some wires that are missing.

The door sills are the same on all cars with "Ambient Light"
