8 speed auto?

Theoretically a CVT would be the ultimate in performance and efficiency so I have to think an 8 speed does indeed fit the bill but I was more concerned with perception and annoyance rather than questioning true performance or efficiency. It makes sense if there are 2 extra gears you can see how the acceleration is drastically enhanced-probably good for making up a difference of 40hp/40tq between 2 cars. Yet all the literature talks about the efficiency

Apologies in advance if I don't have the terminology 100% right. My question relates specifically to gear change speed/gear change rpm point. If you choose sport mode while in 'D' using the switches beside the gear selector does this use the same ''programme'' as if you moved the gear selector left over to sport mode, i.e would change speed and rpm point of change be the same as if you had move the selector to the left. I appreciate the button also changes throttle response.
